FAQ Rubber Flooring (Common Questions)
ARE THE TILES DURABLE?
Won’t crack or chip and are virtually indestructible.
ARE THE TILES SLIPPERY?
- Because it’s rubber, it has excellent anti-slip properties.
- When new, tiles have a silicon release film that dissipates in 3 to 4 days when exposed to natural sunlight or over time with traffic.
IS HEAT A PROBLEM?
- Similar in direct sunlight to concrete or brick paving stone.
- The darker the color the more it retains heat – black being the hottest
DO THE TILES HAVE AN ODOR?
- Manufactured with low VOC (volatile organic compound) ingredients.
- Since each rubber granule is encapsulated, it does not off-gas.
HOW DO YOU CUT THE TILES?
1/2″ to 1″ tiles are best cut with a utility knife using a straight edge as a guide. Score and bend the cut seam until through. 2″ or thicker tiles can be trimmed with an orbital jigsaw.
DO THE TILES FADE?
- Manufactured with UV stabilizers, allowing color to hold.
- Minimal fading the first year; gradually fades evenly afterwards.
HOW DO YOU CLEAN THE TILES?
- Pressure wash or hose.
- Shovel with plastic blade or snow blower.
- Not affected by de-icing products.
IS THIS MATERIAL GLUED/ FASTENED?
Neither is required for our full interlocking designs as the product can be installed over a leveled and compacted sub base. If installation is over concrete or wood, gluing is recommended to prevent movement.
For our under/overlap link system tiles, it is recommended these tiles be both glued and fastened together. Doing so will mitigate expansion, contraction, and movement.
Our resurfacing tiles – covering existing concrete or wood – must be glued down. As there is a solid base below, 1/2″ thick product will suffice. Gluing down will mitigate expansion, contraction, and movement.
SOME OF THE COMMON PROBLEMS ARE THE LOSS OF FILLING MATERIAL BETWEEN BLOCKS, THE EROSION OF THE SUB GRADE, DRAINAGE ISSUES AND PLANTS GROWING IN BETWEEN.
WOULD THIS MATERIAL ADDRESS THESE ISSUES BETTER?
Yes, first off this product does not require any filling materials between seams as our proprietary interlocking or overlap design fits tight in all directions and prevents any lateral separation.
Eco-Flex® large format tiles have tighter seams which mean less erosion of the sub-base and a reduction from plant growth underneath, or the embedding of airborne seed planting in the gaps.
WHAT TYPE OF SUB GRADE IS REQUIRED?
The sub grade for our products would be the same as for interlocking brick, asphalt, or concrete.
No specialized treatment required.
DOES IT COME IN BLOCKS OR TILE/SHEET?
Our Eco-Flex® products come in tile formats, ranging from 4 sq.ft. per unit up to 105 sq.ft. per unit.
IS THIS MATERIAL USEFUL FOR WHEELCHAIR RAMPS?
Yes, all wheeled implements including walkers, strollers, and even pedestrians with canes have easy access when using these surfaces due to the non-slip, sure-footed characteristics, even when wet.
HOW DOES THIS MATERIAL WITHSTAND VANDALISM?
The density of this rubber surface allows for spray paint to be power washed away if done so within a few days.
As the surface is not porous, gum will not as readily stick to the surface and can also be power washed away.
The density also provides durability against knifes for carving initials, etc.
As for theft or vandalism due to removal, the sections are quite heavy and not that easy to access or lift once installed. It would be as cumbersome as stealing interlocking pavers.
As for burning, the product is fire rated and will not ignite on the surface.
HOW DURABLE ARE ECO-FLEX PRODUCTS?
Since Eco-Flex® products are manufactured from recycled tires, it takes on the same durability characteristics as a tire.
It takes a long period of time for tires to disintegrate. Since Eco-Flex® products are 97% tire rubber our products will last for many years.
WHAT IS THE FLAME SPREAD RATING ?
ASTM E162 Tested.
- Surface flammability flame spread index 131.18 at average temperature rise of 157.7 C.
- Material meets ANSI Z124.1 and Z124.2 Appendix III requirement for an average DM of 450 or less.
WHAT IS THE TABER ABRASION?
ASTM C 501 Tested: Wear index 270 (Using heavy duty abrading wheels and 100 grams pressure on each wheel at 1000 cycles).
WHAT ARE OUR PRODUCTS MADE FROM ?
Recycled rubber crumb from tires, and urethane resin binder.
WHAT IS THE DENSITY HARDNESS?
ASTM 2240 Tested: Shore A 63, compressed to 2000 psi.
WHAT IS THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION?
ASTM C 1028 Tested: 0.92-0.96 dry & 0.89-0.92 wet.
WHAT IS THE SKID RESISTANCE?
ASTM 303 Tested: Average 66 dry & 43 wet.
WILL SALT/CHLORIDE STAIN?
ASTM B117 Tested: No stain or residue after 24hr test.
WHAT IS THE XENON ARC WEATHERING(UV TEST)?
* 200 hrs UV testing. No change after 2 years. * Urethane binder UV inhibitors.
